Event Recap

Bout# 1

Steven Cagle

Vs.

Grady Briley

Cagle is unable to bring Briley to the ground early and loses his footing twice because of the punching offense and pressure of Briley. Briley delivers solid knees to the body in a clinch and Cagle appears to have an issue with his eye. Cagle drops to the mat as a result of the strikes and Briley smothers him in side control and pounds away. Cagle taps to escape the strikes but it is not seen by the referee and the bout continues. Briley continues to lands fists to the head of Cagle. Cagle again motions his wish to end the fight and this time the referee sees it and halts the bout.

Grady Briley defeats Steven Cagle by Submission (Tapout due to Strikes) – 0:54 RD 1

Bout# 2

Airyn Burr

Vs.

Jayson Handshy

Burr charges in with strikes right after the two fighters touch gloves. Handshy retreats to the fence and succumbs to a takedown. Handshy looks for an escape and Burr continues to dish out punches. Handshy maneuvers for an ankle lock and Burr loses his dominant position in order to escape. Handshy repays his opponent with a little ground and pound from Burr’s guard. Burr quickly slides on a triangle choke to gets Handshy’s attention. Handshy stands and tries to slam his way out of the hold but Burr maintains his hold and is landing punches to the face of his opponent throughout the slam. Round two Burr seems willing to trade strikes with Handshy, who by all appearances is a Thai boxing stylist. Burr is the more effective striker but is too aggressive and is put on the mat by Handshy when he attempts a flying knee. With no action on the ground, referee Kevin Nix stands the fight up. Burr stuns Handshy with a right hand sending him retreating to the fence and covering up. Burr throws every strike in his arsenal at a shelled up Handshy, but with no response from Handshy, the referee stops the bout much to the dismay of Handshy and the sold out crowd in attendance.

Bout# 3

Tye Brown

Vs.

Cody Garlett

Garlett closes the distance quickly and trips Brown to the mat. Brown looks for a sweep from his halfguard but ultimately fights his way back to his feet. Brown showcases his boxing and forces Garlett to look for another takedown. This time Brown is prepared and sinks in a guillotine choke for the finish.

Bout# 4

William Albrecht

Vs.

Jeremijah Sanders

Sanders is announced to the audience as training in the art of “face punching and snuggling”. Albrecht apparently has done some snuggling of his own and immediately clinches Sanders and pulls flying guard. Sanders takes a moment to reflect and then slams his opponent to the mat with authority. Albrecht locks on a loose triangle choke and begins landing pointed elbow strikes to the top of Sanders’ head. Sanders manages an escape and finds himself in full mount, raining down punches. Albrecht tries a TK sweep as Sanders pounds away but finally decides his only escape is to give up his back. Sanders follows and slides in a rear naked choke for the quick tap.

Bout# 5

Ryan Rogers

Vs.

Josh Clarke

Rogers enters the cage sporting a 2-0 professional record but it was the pro debuter Clarke that looked like a seasoned veteran. Clarke landed kicks and punches from the outside seemingly at will as Rogers held the center of the cage, looking to counter. Growing tired of the striking game, Rogers attempts a single leg and Clarke stuffs him into the fence. Clarke piles up the points landing both hands and feet on a very game, but outgunned Rogers. Rogers finally sneaks in a wicked body shot to keep Clarke honest but the onslaught continues as Clarke lands a crushing overhand right that folds Rogers to the canvas. Clarke follows him to the mat with punches and the referee wisely steps in to stop the bout.

Bout# 6

Jared Lopez

Vs.

Christopher Barnes

The action starts out slow with each fighter taking turns loading up and swinging wildly. Lopez lands a few meaningful strikes but doesn’t seem to faze Barnes. Suddenly things pick up as Lopez drops Barnes dead in his tracks with a left hand. Miraculously Barnes is up just as fast as he was down, displaying amazing recovery skills. Barnes picks up the pace and backs Lopez against the cage with his punches. The two fighters weave and trade missing hooks. Finally Barnes throws an overhand right that just misses and Lopez counters with a good night right hook that put Barnes flat on his back and sends his mouthpiece skipping across the cage. Amazingly, once the referee calls for the bell Barnes is right back on his feet and looking ready to go.

Jared Lopez defeats Christopher Barnes by KO (Punch) – 2:20 RD 1

Bout# 7

Liz Carreiro

Vs.

Melissa Vasquez

The crowd voices their appreciation as the ladies MMA bout is announced. The women quickly take the fight to the fence and battle for control in the clinch. Carreiro has Vasquez pinned against the fence but Vasquez slips out and lands a handful of punches as payback. Carreiro re-clinches and lands a great knee to the body of Vasquez. The fight moves to the ground where Carreiro quickly shows her cage savvy, driving Vasquez to the fence and delivering forearms with bad intentions to seal up round one. Carreiro goes to her corner nursing a sizeable mouse under her left eye. Round two Carreiro stun Vasquez early with a punch and drives her to the fence before they stall out and are restarted. Vasquez looks to be running out of gas and is swinging wildly in desperation and missing. Carreiro seizes the opportunity and dumps Vasquez to the mat. Working from side control, Carreiro delivers hard forearms to the face of Vasquez. The referee urges Vasquez to improve her position but Carriero’s offense proves too great and forces a stop to the fight.

Liz Carreiro defeats Melissa Vasquez by TKO (Referee Stoppage) – 2:08 RD 2

Bout# 8

Rocky Spenser

Vs.

Mike O’Donnell

Spenser owns the beginning of the round with his striking. O’Donnell keeps his composure and pulls guard to go directly to a triangle choke. Spenser turns to a slam for his means of defense but O’Donnell weathers it and switches his feet to tighten up the choke and force the tap.

Mike O’Donnell defeats Rocky Spenser by Submission (Triangle Choke) – 1:01 RD 1

Bout# 9

Tom Jones

Vs.

Prince McLean

This fight is the rematch from their 2006 bout where McLean took home the victory via controversial stoppage. Jones looks to even the score and find his way back to title contention. McLean keeps his feet moving early, picking his shots and dancing around the cage. Jones stays covered up and counters. McLean’s speed seems to be difference in the fight as Jones can’t catch him coming in or going out. McLean backs Jones up to the fence and sneaks punches through Jones’ defense. Jones keeps looking for openings but catches a big uppercut that stuns him. McLean smells blood and sends a right hook to clean up that puts Jones on the canvas to stay, this time leaving no doubt of his victory.

Bout# 10

Meisha Tate

Vs.

Jessica Bednark

Tate comes to the cage a veteran of HookNShoot where she competed in an 8 women tournament along side FCF Women’s champion Nicdali Calanoc. Bednark is no stranger to the sport with a 3-1 professional record and member of Chuck Norris’s World Combat League. Meisha “Takedown” Tate wastes no time living up to her nickname as she catches a kick from Bednark and slams her to the canvas. Tate quickly takes full mount and feeds Bednark a steady diet of punches. Bednark covers and defends, even answering back with two punches from flat on her back. Tate stays patient and methodical, slowly turning up the heat and withering away Bednark’s defenses until finally the referee is forced to call a halt to the bout. Hopefully we will see the paths of Tate and Calanoc cross in the near future.

Bout# 11

FCF 170lb Championship

Joe Christopher

Vs.

Shawn Fitzsimmons

Christopher comes to the cage for his first title defense since winning the vacent belt former title holder Joey Gorczynski left behind in his pursuit to capture the 185lb championship. Christopher makes his gameplan evident early as he immediately shoots for a takedown from all the way across the cage, finally bringing Fitzsimmons down against the fence. Fitzsimmons has a brief guillotine but Christopher escapes to half guard. The action slows and the crowd boos the pace of the main event. Christopher postures up pins Fitzsimmons' arm down with his knee and lands several undefended strikes. Fitzsimmons fights back to his feet and gives Christopher a chance to spend time on his own back with a takedown. Christopher works for a kimura from his guard and has it sunk very deep yet Fitzsimmons is able to somehow roll his way to safety. The fight moves back to the feet but doesn;t stay there long as Christopher takes his opponent down once again and mounts him. Christopher punches away and then takes an arm when Fitzsimmons tries to bridge out. Christopher fights for the armbar as Fitzsimmons grabs his other wrist to prevent the submission. It was not apparent if Fitzsimmons actually tapped out or not but the referee steps in and stops the bout. Fitzsimmons did not appear to dispute the outcome. After being announced as the winner, Christopher takes the mic and uncharacteristically proceeds to give the crowd a serious tongue lashing for booing the battle on the ground. He informed them if they didn’t like takedowns they should watch boxing and then stormed off. Comically, the ring announcer then presented the new champion to the crowd who answered with a cascade of boos.
